Breaking Glass

It was great to start the new year by meeting up with good friends whilst learning new skills on a glass fusing workshop. The work shop was run lead by the lovely Chantel from stockport_glass_fusing , who was so inspiring and shared her amazing skills and knowledge about this art form. The studio was like a rainbow with different coloured glass pieces and powders waiting to be hand crafted into our tiles.

Chantel made it look easy when showing us all how to cut the small glass pieces, but after a practice we got into the knack of it. However I gave up with the nobler cutter which created a more rounded finish. Chantel showed us examples of what we could create, and most of us then decided that we wanted to do a screen print on the glass tile in combination with our glass collage.

It was a great afternoon, and we were curious about what the end results would look like after they had been fired in the kiln. However we would have to wait two weeks to find out before collecting, but it was worth waiting for. We were all very pleased with our results, and will definitely return to further experiment with different techniques. I loved the bubbles which are randomly created when being fired which worked brilliantly in my friend’s dragon fly and fish tiles. It was also interesting to see how the colours developed and especially the beautiful blue which was created by the copper leaf. (Some of us used this when creating pendants with the practice glass we were given, when learning how to cut the glass.).

Thank you Chantel for sharing your talent, skills and knowledge and ultimately inspiring us to be more creative and spend more time with like minded friends.
